What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are considered the gold standard of tooth replacement. Designed in three parts – the titanium posts, metal abutments, and a customized restoration – they fuse with jawbone tissues to create a solid foundation for what will become a natural-looking set of teeth.
Their placement and permanence ensure greater jawbone stimulation and stability while also delivering longer-lasting results that extend 30 years or more.
The 4-Step Dental Implant Process
Many patients are surprised to learn that getting dental implants typically requires multiple appointments spanning several months. This is partly because, unlike dentures and dental bridges, these replacement teeth are surgically embedded in your jaw, which requires a longer recovery period.
At our office in Orlando, Dr. Schnackenberg has the advanced training and state-of-the-art equipment to place and restore your new tooth conveniently under one roof. Continue reading to learn more about each step of the implant process so you know what to expect!
Initial Dental Implant Consultation
Although many experts in Orlando consider dental implants the ideal way to rebuild smiles after tooth loss, that doesn’t mean they’re the best solution to meet everyone’s unique needs. Before this service can be approved, you must consult Dr. Schnackenberg to ensure that you can safely undergo the procedure and recover effectively afterward.
Our team will also examine your mouth and treat any pre-existing issues, like cavities or gum disease, to ensure they don’t interfere with the results. We will also take scans and images to measure your jawbone density to verify whether it’s strong and healthy enough to support this option. Sometimes, an additional bone graft procedure is required to bulk it up before you can continue with your treatment.
Dental Implant Surgery
At our practice in Orlando, Dr. Schackenberg has a decade of experience and has completed the necessary training to provide each step of the process in the office, including oral surgery. He’ll begin your procedure by applying a local anesthetic to numb the area, and also offers two options for sedation that can help you remain calm and comfortable throughout your procedure.
First, he’ll make a small incision in your gums and place the support post for your new tooth. Then, he’ll carefully suture your connective tissues closed and place a protective cap over the top of the pole that sits above your gumline.
Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment
It can take three to six months to recover after your surgery because that’s about how long it takes your mouth to generate enough new bone growth to fuse with the biocompatible rod. Then, you’ll need a second procedure to place the abutment, or connector piece, that will eventually anchor the tooth-shaped portion of your implant.
Then, we’ll make digital impressions of your teeth, gums, and bite alignment and send it to our in-house dental laboratory to begin designing your dental crown, or other appropriate restoration.
Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s)
Our team uses local and in-house labs to provide everything from your dental implant abutment to the final tooth-shaped cap that will be cemented to it. Unlike most providers who rely on outside laboratories, we can create these prosthetics in the office to reduce your wait time.
Your new tooth is made from durable, customizable ceramic that can be color-matched to your natural enamel for seamless results. Once it’s finalized, we’ll schedule you to try it on to verify that it fits well and that your bite is comfortable. If everything checks out, we will cement it in place before sending your home with your recently rebuilt smile!
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants are quickly becoming one of the most popular and trusted tooth loss solutions in the US, and it’s easy to see why. These modern dental marvels anchor directly to your jawbone, providing multiple benefits that more traditional treatments like bridges and dentures just can’t match. If you’re curious about the benefits of dental implants in Orlando, read more below. You’ll see why trusted implant dentists, like Dr. Rodriguez are recommending them for smile transformations.
Day-to-Day Benefits
From the moment you go home with your new implants, you’ll notice the small, but impactful effects they have on your daily life. With implants, you can enjoy a more natural, confident lifestyle knowing that your smile is both beautiful and secure.
- Eat all your favorite foods without worry.
- Speak clearly without slipping or clicking sounds.
- Brush and floss just like natural teeth with no special tools needed.
- Smile, laugh, and interact with confidence in any setting.
- Enjoy stable teeth that won’t shift out of place or dislodge at the wrong moment.
Health Benefits
You may not be able to see all the hidden health advantages that dental implants provide, but you'll quickly be able to feel them. Over time, your sturdy smile enhancements will:
- Support surrounding teeth to prevent them from shifting and ruining your bite.
- Improve your ability to chew, reducing the risk of indigestion and reflux.
- Help you eat a more varied, nutritious diet that can improve your physical health.
- Reduce the risk of gum irritation or sores common with dentures.
When you invest in dental implants, you’re protecting your smile and improving your quality of life with every bite.
Long-Term Benefits
Dental implants are built to last, and with proper oral care, you’ll be smiling with them for decades. Here are some of the benefits you’ll likely experience in the long run:
- Stays cost-effective over time compared to replacing dentures or bridges.
- Preserves jawbone density, keeping your bite sturdy and comfortable.
- Prevents the “sunken” look that often comes with tooth loss, providing a more youthful appearance.
These lasting benefits make dental implants one of the best long-term investments you can make in your oral health. If you’re ready to learn more about dental implants and how they can help you smile and feel your best every day, call our office to schedule a consultation.
Advanced Dental Implant Technology
One of the reasons our dental implants are far superior to those found at other practices is that we use a CT/cone beam scanner as well as local and in-house labs. Our CT scanner generates high-resolution images that allow for more precise and accurate treatment planning, while our local labs offer Dr. Rodriguez better control when crafting customized zirconia restorations much faster than any other dental office nearby.
